The Idea

I had an idea to put together a database of consumer products where consumers (namely pregnant women, women breastfeeding, or women of reproductive age) could scan the barcode of a product at the point of sale to obtain ingredient information.  The mobile application would then parse ingredients through a database of carcinogens, mutagens, and reproductive toxins (CMRs) to give the consumer more information about what is contained within the product.

Should a product be flagged containing CMR(s) the application user could easily tap on “show alternatives” which would pull up a list of comparable products free of CMRs.

This project was fun and challenging at the same time. Ultimately, I wound up putting the project on hold and never released the application to the marketplace. One of the main databases the mobile app used for API calls for product data was a CPI database managed by a third party. The company decided to sunset that product. Building a database of a million plus products with ingredients and other data points would be too costly and inefficient for only one person to do. Here are some of the screenshots of the mobile application.
